GLOBALG.A.P Withdraws Seed Sprouting Certificates
June 10, 2011
GLOBALG.A.P Withdraws All Seed Sprouting Certificates
Following the latest published results of investigation on the source of the German EHEC outbreak, GLOBALG.A.P makes the following announcement:
GLOBALG.A.P is a food safety and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) management system and process certification, that is based on a list of good practices and standard operating procedures in conjunction with the requirement of complementary risk assessments and risk management for identified areas. Following these procedures and assessments leads to a high control to manage the safety of food products, but does NOT guarantee a safe product to 100% .
The scope of GLOBALG.A.P is "on the farm" until the entry point into a processing and manufacturing process, which shall be controlled by Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), that are out of the scope of GLOBALG.A.P.
The GAP process under GLOBALG.A.P has been developed by industry and retail experts and is based on latest science. A centrally conducted and continuously reviewed generic HACCP plan serves as foundation of the Control Points and Compliance Criteria. This review and adaptation happens on the international level and also regionally and nationally by so-called National Technical Working Groups. The final process rules are published on the GLOBALG.A.P website, with the permanent request to provide suggestions for improvements.
As a precautionary principle GLOBALG.A.P has decided to temporarily withdraw all 13 certificates of seed sprouting operations and stop new certification for seed sprouts, until a review of the situation around sprout certification has been completed.
The previous communication remains into effect, by which GLOBALG.A.P encouraged all GLOBALG.A.P certified producers to focus on the required hygiene measures.
