GLOBALG.A.P addressing Water Use
In many areas of the world, water resources are becoming scarce due to the continued increase in all forms of water use. This can result in environmental degradation, economic uncertainties and losses, and sociopolitical conflicts between water users and regions.
GLOBALG.A.P is already covering many aspects of sustainable use of water as part of Good Agricultural Practices. As a standard for Good Agricultural Practices GLOBALG.A.P can contribute significantly to a better usage of the water resources in agricultural production and thereby to the conservation of biodiversity.
Since 2008 WWF and the German based retailer REWE Group havebeen working together on sustainable strawberry production in the Coto de Do?ana in Spain. The partners focus on the reduction of water use and the legality of water use and land-titles. Within this project a set of criteria for sustainable water use has been developed and was proposed to GLOBALG.A.P. In a pilot phase these criteria have now been implemented with GLOBALG.A.P certified REWE producers in January 2010.
The project aims not only to support an improvement of the current water use practice in the region, but also to assess, which of these criteria and measures are feasible to be incorporated into the GLOBALG.A.P standard requirements to cope with the growing challenges of water resource management. The GLOBALG.A.P Sector Committee for Fruit and Vegetables has decided to incorporate some of the aspects in the new version for 2011.
