GLOBALGAP Success Story: The first Shrimp Certific

The GLOBALGAP Standard for shrimp has found its first industry applications in Asia and Latin America. First certified products were shown on the European Seafood Show in Brussels in April 2009.
THE ISSUE
The GLOBALGAP Shrimp Standard was formally launched during the Seafood Exposition in Brussels on 23 April 2008. The launch of the Shrimp Standard underlined aquaculture′s growing global expansion with consumers expecting from retailers to provide safe, sustainable and healthy seafood. The standard setting procedure involved a worldwide stakeholder consultation over a two-year period, with the involvement of retailers, producers, processors and non-government organisations.
The market has been waiting for the first certificate as a trigger for retailers to communicate their demand.
THE INITIATIVE
An active new GLOBALGAP Board member, Carlos Perez – Marchelot S.A., from Ecuador has invested into his shrimp hatcheries and farms to demonstrate that certification is possible and viable as commercial activity. Inspectorate issued the certificate.
In parallel, the shrimp farming operation CP Prima in Indonesia, which participated in the trial audits during the development process, took the initiative to implement all requirements in hatcheries, farm and processing, and received certification by the Certification Body DNV. CP Prima offers their product to European retailers and food service via Heiploeg BV.
THE PROCESS
GLOBALGAP published the new standard and all procedures on the website in English, Spanish, Bahasa Indonesian, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese and Portuguese and established the certification process. First Certification Bodies have invested in qualifying their auditors according to the rigid specifications and completed the audits in the abovementioned farming operations in both continents in March and April 2009.
To meet the traceability requirements, GLOBALGAP Chain of Custody certificates were issued to Heiploeg, NL, and the packaging facility for Marchelot S.A. in Ecuador.

THE IMPACT
The two farming operations make more than 30.000 tons of GLOBALGAP certified shrimp available to the global market place. This announcement has now triggered growing interest for certification from a number of producers including Thailand and India. Among them are operations with small-scale farms that will be able to respond to the growing retailer demand for certified shrimp through GLOBALGAP Group Certification, Option 2.
