GLOBALGAP Shrimp Standard Launched

Brussels, 23rd April - Today at the launch of the GLOBALGAP shrimp standard Dr. Kristian Moeller, Secretary GLOBALGAP, explained the development process for the GLOBALGAP Shrimp standard: “The shrimp standard adds to our salmon standard launched in 2004 and which is now recognised as a reference standard around the world for farmed salmon certification. The launch of the shrimp standard underlines aquaculture’s growing global expansion with consumers expecting retailers to provide safe, sustainable and healthy seafood.”
The standard setting procedure involved a worldwide stakeholder consultation over a two year period, with the involvement of retailers, producers, processors and non-government organisations.
THE STANDARD
1. Trialled in six farms in three different countries in Asia and Latin America by GLOBALGAP approved Certification Body Auditors experienced in GLOBALGAP Certification.
2. Applicable to small scale and large scale operations
3. Stakeholder consultation: generating 15 draft documents through the process up to the point of final approval.
4. Development process based on ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards.

GLOBALGAP SHRIMP FARMING
The scope of the GLOBALGAP Shrimp Standard covers:
1. Legislative framework compliance compulsory for obtaining GLOBALGAP certification.
2. Closed-cycle: where broodstock and larvae sourcing must not origin from wild resources and must be GLOBALGAP certified.
3. Food Safety: covering all critical aspects where food safety is a potential risk.
4. Compound Feed: sourcing must be GLOBALGAP recognized.
5. Environment & Ecology Impact: above the legislative frame, tools available to register each location of shrimp farming activities to cross-check the non-establishment of shrimp farms in mangroves, protected areas and other high conservation value areas.
6. Social Criteria: base criteria to evaluate sustainable social criteria implemented in shrimp farms and surrounding communities.
GLOBALGAP BENCHMARKING
The Benchmarking provides tools to recognize already established international and national schemes and avoids double auditing.
WIDE STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION
The standard setting procedure involved a wide stakeholder consultation of nearly two years, including a workshop in Thailand and involvement of stakeholders worldwide, consultation with NGOs working directly in shrimp farming environmental and social impacts.
